United States Ambassador to the Maldives, Patricia Butenis, paid a courtesy call on the President on Thursday.

Discussions at the meeting were mainly on the political and economic progress in the Maldives. At the meeting, the President gave an overview of the economic situation.

The US Ambassador inquired about recent protests organised by the opposition DRP, and praised government’s response following complaints of police mishandling of journalists who covered the protests. Special Envoy Ibrahim Hussain Zaki met with representatives of media following Monday’s protests.

The President assured the US Ambassador that government would always uphold press freedom, even during difficult times.
