Vice President Ahmed Adheeb Abdul Ghafoor has today officially opened the Sixth Regional 3R forum in Asia and the Pacific, being held at Dharubaaruge.
In his keynote speech, the Vice President underlined the high priority accorded by the Government to resource efficiency, noting that we rely heavily on our natural environment for economic growth. He also said that the sustainable use of our resources was vital to achieve the Government’s goal of transforming the economy of Maldives, to ensure a more resilient and prosperous future for the Maldivian people.
Speaking at the forum, Vice President Adheeb underlined the vitality of adequate waste management to maintain the health of our environment. He said that changing lifestyles as a result of economic development was in turn making waste management increasingly challenging for Maldives.
Continuing on, the Vice President highlighted the recent development of a national policy on waste management, based on international principles. He also noted the special arrangements made by the Government within the policy to make it economically feasible, environmentally sustainable and locally appropriate.
In his speech, Vice President Adheeb expressed his confidence that through the 3R forum, participants will be enlightened on the various efforts and successes throughout the region for innovative, effective and smart solutions in achieving resource efficiency.
Following the opening ceremony, Vice President Ahmed Adheeb Abdul Ghafoor inaugurated the International 3R Exhibition, also being held at Dharubaaruge.
