President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has on Sunday said that his Government will not tolerate inhumane acts of violence and will take all necessary measures to prevent such acts. The President made this remark while speaking at the official function held to mark the 82nd anniversary of the Maldives Police Service.
Speaking at the ceremony held last evening at Dharubaaruge, President Yameen expressed deep sorrow and concern on the increased rates of homicides in the country. In this regard the President announced the Government’s decision to dispatch troops of the Maldives National Defence Force to assist the Maldives Police Service, in a special operation to curb such acts.
Underlining the recent increase in violent crimes against the expats in the country, President Yameen said that his Government would not discriminate against foreign nationals in ensuring security and protecting the people.
In his speech President Yameen described the Maldives Police Service as the chief law enforcement agency of the country, established in accordance with the constitution. In this regard, the President highlighted that there was an existing efficient system to monitor the code of conduct of the police and effectively investigate allegations of misconduct. The President also noted that the Police Integrity Commission, Government institutions, the People’s Majlis and the Judiciary guarantees effective police accountability.
President Yameen stated that his Government would always uphold the country’s sovereignty and expressed assurance that no imperialistic power could meddle in its domestic affairs. Highlighting that this year marks the country’s 50th anniversary of independence, President Yameen said that all citizens should condemn the actions of the opposition to seek foreign involvement in the country’s domestic affairs through the facade of democracy consolidation.
At last night’s function, President Yameen presented tokens of appreciation to members of the public for their assistance and support for the Maldives Police Service during the past year. The President also presented commemorative plaques to Police Officers who have served for over 25 years.
The President also conferred colours and medals on Police officers.
