President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has said that the Government aims to guarantee a prosperous and affluent life of peace and security for all Maldivian people. The President made this remark while speaking at a rally organised by PPM and MDA last evening, in celebration of their victory in the recent by-elections. The President also assured that the law will catch up to all felons and offenders in the country.

In his speech, the President appealed to everyone not to expect him to intervene in court cases, noting that the outcome of a case was entirely up to the courts. He also emphasised that a President did not have any role in determining the verdict. Speaking in this regard, the President pointed out that calling for the President to interfere with a court case was calling for obstruction of justice.

Continuing on, the President said that it was his duty as President, to uphold the constitution and abide by it lawfully. He said that the President was obligated by the constitution to ascertain the enforcement of law in the country, and not be directly involved in the law enforcement process. He further assured that all independent institutions were guaranteed by the constitution, an autonomous environment to carry out all their work fairly and impartially.

Highlighting the important work done in reforming the law, President Yameen noted that the most significant aspect was the separation of powers of the State, with defined authority for each branch to oversee the other. However, the President underscored that today there were demands for the all the branches to be merged back together, and brought back under the authority of the President.

In his speech, the President said that some countries often labelled the Maldives as a country that disputed its constitution, on the account that its affairs were being carried out in an unacceptable manner for them. However, the President reiterated that in the Maldives too, the law was being implemented in the same way as it was in those countries, which is through the necessary judicial channels. Noting the international community’s interest in the internal affairs of the Maldives, the President guaranteed that the Maldives will no longer be manipulated by a foreign country.
