In a letter sent to President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, Prime Minister of Nepal, H.E. Sushil Koirala has expressed his appreciation to President Yameen for the significant contributions he has made as outgoing Chair of SAARC, in taking the process of regional cooperation forward. He has also thanked the members of the Maldivian delegation who attended the 18th SAARC Summit, for their active participation, constructive efforts, and erudite deliberations on the issues of common concerns of the South Asian region.
In his letter, the Nepalese Prime Minister has said that the Kathmandu Declaration issued at the conclusion of the 18th summit embodied the common desire for peace, amity, stability and prosperity in the South Asian region, and that we now have to concentrate our efforts to implement the decisions and commitments made in the Kathmandu Declaration. He noted that the proper implementation of decisions would help enhance the credibility of SAARC.
Prime Minister Koirala has expressed his confidence that SAARC would be an effective organization to transform the development landscape of the South Asian region, which is endowed with an abundance of human and natural resources. He has also called for concerted efforts and collective political will to fully realise South Asia’s untapped potentials.
The Prime Minister of Nepal has further underscored that the 18th SAARC Summit had set the tone for a strong partnership for regional cooperation, and the need to maintain the momentum generated at the last summit. He has assured President Yameen that Nepal, as the SAARC’s current Chair, would make all possible efforts in cooperation and collaboration with member States, to promote regional cooperation and bring about visible changes in the living standards of our peoples.
Highlighting the bilateral relations between Nepal and the Maldives, Prime Minister Koirala has pointed out that the Maldives and Nepal possessed great potentials to enlarge the scope of cooperation in many areas for mutual benefit. He reiterated that Nepal remains committed to further cementing historically warm and friendly ties between the Maldives and Nepal.
