President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has appealed to Maldivian volunteers to initiative efforts to stop violence against women, as well gang violence. The President made this appeal while speaking at a function held on Wednesday evening at Dharubaaruge to commemorate this year’s International Volunteer Day.

Speaking at the ceremony organized by the Maldivian Red Crescent, President Yameen firmly asserted that comprehensive efforts should be undertaken to stop violence against women, through a process of education and advocacy. The President further noted that preventative mechanisms need to be put in place to tackle youth involvement in gang related violence, which is also a serious issue currently plaguing Maldivian society. President Yameen stated that he would be eternally thankful to any individuals or groups who are able to successfully assist in the combating of these societal challenges.

At the ceremony, the President presented commemorative plaques and certificates to: exemplary volunteers from each branch of the Maldivian Red Crescent in the year 2014, five exemplary national volunteers of the year, and the most proactive volunteer of the year.

The ceremony was also attended by First Lady Fathimath Ibrahim, and senior Government officials.
