The new Sri Lankan High Commissioner accredited to the Maldives, His Excellency W. G. N. H. Dias presented his letter of credence to President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom this morning.
At the ceremony held at the President’s Office to present the credentials, President Yameen congratulated High Commissioner Dias on the commencement of his term. Following the ceremony, the President and the High Commissioner discussed ways to further enhance existing close friendly relations between the Maldives and Sri Lanka, and explored new avenues for cooperation. Recalling the recent historic State Visit to the Maldives by President Rajapaksa, President Yameen highlighted the importance of speedy implementation of agreed initiatives from both sides. He also welcomed the news that the next meeting of the bilateral Joint Commission is to be held soon in Colombo.
High Commissioner Dias assured the President of his firm commitment to advancing relations in his tenure of office, and conveyed the good wishes of his Government. He thanked the President for his valuable advice and assured that the Sri Lankan High Commission would liaise closely with concerned authorities of the Maldivian Government in implementing bilateral arrangements between the two neighbourly countries.
The meeting was attended by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Dunya Maumoon and Minister at the President’s Office, Hon. Mohamed Hussain Shareef.
