The new Ambassador of the Kingdom of Bhutan accredited to the ‎Maldives, Her Excellency Pema Choden presented her Letter of Credence to ‎President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, this morning.‎

At the ceremony held at the President’s Office to present credentials, ‎President Yameen welcomed Ambassador Choden to the Maldives, and ‎‎congratulated the Ambassador on the commencement of her term.‎

Meeting the new Ambassador after the ceremonial presentation of ‎credentials, the President expressed his confidence that relations between the ‎two countries would further strengthen during the tenure of Ambassador ‎Choden. Underscoring the shared challenges faced by the Maldives and ‎Bhutan, President Yameen and Ambassador Choden explored avenues for ‎further cooperation ‎between the two countries, especially in representing their ‎needs as small states on the global stage. Recalling high level exchanges ‎between the two SAARC partners, President Yameen highlighted that the ‎Maldives counted Bhutan among its closest friends and dearest neighbours. ‎He also conveyed his sincere good wishes to the Bhutanese King and Prime ‎Minister.‎

Ambassador Choden assured President Yameen of her commitment ‎to strengthening bilateral relations between the Maldives and Bhutan. On this point, she welcomed the role ‎of the Maldives in raising global awareness on the threats posed by climate ‎change, especially on developing countries.‎

The meeting was attended by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. ‎Dunya ‎Maumoon and Minister at the President’s Office, Hon. Mohamed ‎Hussain Shareef.‎
