The new Ambassador of the Kingdom of Bhutan accredited to the Maldives, Her Excellency Pema Choden presented her Letter of Credence to President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, this morning.
At the ceremony held at the President’s Office to present credentials, President Yameen welcomed Ambassador Choden to the Maldives, and congratulated the Ambassador on the commencement of her term.
Meeting the new Ambassador after the ceremonial presentation of credentials, the President expressed his confidence that relations between the two countries would further strengthen during the tenure of Ambassador Choden. Underscoring the shared challenges faced by the Maldives and Bhutan, President Yameen and Ambassador Choden explored avenues for further cooperation between the two countries, especially in representing their needs as small states on the global stage. Recalling high level exchanges between the two SAARC partners, President Yameen highlighted that the Maldives counted Bhutan among its closest friends and dearest neighbours. He also conveyed his sincere good wishes to the Bhutanese King and Prime Minister.
Ambassador Choden assured President Yameen of her commitment to strengthening bilateral relations between the Maldives and Bhutan. She noted that although the Maldives is an island nation and Bhutan a land-locked Himalayan Kingdom, the two countries do share common challenges of stress on their pristine environments. On this point, she welcomed the role of the Maldives in raising global awareness on the threats posed by climate change, especially on developing countries.
The meeting was attended by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Dunya Maumoon and Minister at the President’s Office, Hon. Mohamed Hussain Shareef.
