High Commissioner of Canada accredited to the Maldives H.E. Shelley Whiting has paid a courtesy call on President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
At the meeting held at the President’s Office this morning, the President and the Canadian High Commissioner spoke on the importance of finding further opportunities to build on the existing good relations between the Maldives and Canada. In this regard, discussions were held on expanding cooperation in the areas of promoting clean energy and curbing global environmental issues. Discussions were also held on the foreign investment opportunities available in the Maldives.
President Yameen said that the Government prioritises its developmental agenda focusing on the most pressing needs of the people. He said that the Government was working on realigning project funds in a way that would solve the most urgent problems faced by the people. In this regard, the President noted the lack of proper sewerage and garbage disposal systems in the islands, and stressed the lack of such basic facilities in the island communities.
Underlining that youth empowerment was one of the main goals of this Government; President Yameen shared with the Canadian High Commissioner, some of the projects targeted for youth. The President also highlighted the main objectives of the country’s new foreign policy.
The Canadian High Commissioner conveyed her congratulations to President Yameen on his victory in the presidential race of November 2013. She also congratulated the Maldives’ coalition Government for its success in the parliamentary elections held on 22 March 2014.
The meeting was attended by Minister at the President’s Office Hon. Mohamed Hussain Shareef, and Ambassador-at-Large H.E. Abdulla Hameed.
