Vice President Dr Mohamed Jameel Ahmed has launched the Government’s Legislative Agenda for the coming 5 years, and the Strategic Plan of the Attorney General’s Office.

Speaking at the ceremony held at Nasandhura Palace Hotel last evening, the Vice President said that the people’s confidence in our legal system could only be ensured if the law was executed in a civilized manner. He noted that the people were already showing concern over acts of disruption within the community, and that the people were not able to trust the current legal framework to take counteraction.

In his speech, the Vice President said that the legislative agenda aims to achieve the Government’s goals set for the next 5 years. He noted that this agenda was an important tool in delivering various Government policies to the people.

Vice President Jameel underscored that the Government’s highest priority, and its most important goal, was to enact the necessary laws to achieve the Government’s policies. Speaking in this regard, the Vice President said that even the economic sector was in need of important laws in order to achieve our economic goals.

In his speech, the Vice President said that the principles held by the Government did not encourage criticizing the courts of law or the judiciary. However, he said that it supported working with the judiciary, and providing the cooperation and assistance required for the reform process of the courts and other judicial institutions. The Vice President further assured of the Government’s commitment to provide all the assistance required.

The Vice President underlined that the Maldivian people had high hopes for the new Constitution of the Maldives to carry out the judicial process efficiently, and noted that a lot of efforts were being put in to achieve this. Vice President Jameel said that the Government gave special attention to uphold, preserve and promote the rule of law. He said that the Government gives highest priority to ensure that everyone was equal before the law, without any discrimination; and the law executed justly so that the people would have confidence in the system.
