WHO Regional Director for South-East Asia Dr. Poonam Khetrapal Singh, has paid a courtesy call on Vice President Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed.
At the meeting held at the President’s Office, discussions were focused on challenges faced by the Maldives in the areas of health, Government health policies and areas of WHO assistance to the Maldives.
Speaking at the meeting, Vice President Jameel underlined the issues the Government needs to address in terms of public health. In this regard, Vice President Jameel stressed the increased burden of non-communicable diseases in the country, whereas notable achievements have been made in the eradication of communicable diseases.
At today’s meeting, Vice President Jameel also briefed the Regional Director on the progress made by the Maldives towards the health-related Millennium Development Goals.
During the meeting, Dr. Poonam Khetrapal Singh commended the Government for achieving the milestones set for the first 100 days. She further assured the Vice President of continued WHO leadership and guidance to the Maldives in issues related to health.
