WHO Regional Director for South-East Asia Dr. Poonam Khetrapal ‎Singh, has paid a courtesy call on Vice President Dr. Mohamed Jameel ‎Ahmed.‎

At the meeting held at the President’s Office, discussions were ‎focused on ‎challenges faced by the Maldives in the areas of health, ‎Government health ‎policies and areas of WHO assistance to the Maldives.‎

Speaking at the meeting, Vice President Jameel underlined ‎the ‎‎issues ‎the Government needs to address in terms of public health. In this ‎regard, Vice President Jameel stressed the increased ‎burden of non-‎communicable diseases in the country, whereas notable achievements have ‎been made in the eradication ‎of communicable diseases. ‎

At today’s meeting, Vice President Jameel also briefed the Regional ‎Director on the progress made by the Maldives towards the health-related ‎Millennium Development Goals. ‎

During the meeting, Dr. Poonam Khetrapal Singh commended the ‎Government for achieving the milestones set for the first 100 days. She ‎further assured the Vice President of continued WHO leadership ‎and ‎guidance to the Maldives in issues related to health.‎
