Government to provide 1000 higher education opportunities

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has this evening announced the Government’s plans to provide a thousand higher education opportunities. Speaking at the Top Achievers Awards 2013, the awarding ceremony of the highest achievers of the 2013 Higher Secondary Examinations, the President said that 500 of those were local courses, and the other 500 were overseas courses.

The President noted that in facilitating higher education, the Government would prioritize the fields of study according to the Government’s requirements. In this regard, the President said that the health sector was among the top priority areas, as well as the areas of economics, banking, and finance.

Highlighting the prestigious achievements of the students being awarded this evening, the President described them as the future of the country. He said that these children were the ones who were going to achieve the country he has envisioned, and that they were the foundation of a brand new generation who would make the whole nation proud.

The President said that when building a civilized society, no child must be left aside, and that the Government would provide education and training facilities to all Maldivians equally. He also stressed that building capacity for the development of the economic sector was a major goal of the Government.

In his speech, the President conveyed his congratulations and appreciation for the hard work put in by the students, parents, guardians and teachers, in achieving the top level positions in the higher secondary examinations. He especially commended the seven students who achieved first place in the world top ten, in the individual subject Accounting, and the 11 students who achieved first place in the national top 10.

At the function held this evening, President Yameen awarded the Presidential scholarship to the 11 students who won 1st place in the national top 10. The President also awarded the Presidential Medal of Top Achievement, to those students who came first in the World Top Ten, in the individual subject Accounting.
