President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has launched the Government’s new health insurance scheme, “Husnuvaa Aasandha”- health insurance for all without a ceiling protection limit. The scheme is part of the Government’s key electoral pledges to provide comprehensive medicare for a healthy population.

Speaking at the ceremony held at Dharubaaruge this evening, the President said that Husnuvaa Aasandha was a benefaction for all citizens, and that it was not unique for a certain sector or age group of the population. The President assured that the scheme would not discriminate against anyone based on their political affiliation, and that the scheme would cater to everyone’s medical needs.

The President noted that the Maldives has the highest expenditure on medical care, among all South Asian countries. He said that the Government’s goal was to upgrade the Maldives’ healthcare system to top class level, through the Husnuvaa Aasandha mechanism inaugurated this evening.

The Husnuvaa Aasandha health insurance scheme would cover all transportation fees of emergency cases; annual medical checkup for those above the age of 30, and for children under 18 years of age; full medical coverage during pregnancy; and medical coverage for terminally ill patients and those with special needs.
