UN Department of Political Affairs’ Director Mr Tamrat Samuel has met with President Mohamed Nasheed. The meeting was held this afternoon at the President’s Office.

Discussions were mainly on the current political situation of the Maldives.

At the meeting, the President spoke on the importance of dialogue to resolve the current political impasse. He said he was pleased that dialogue was underway between MDP and the opposition to resolve the issues that had led to deadlock.

He stressed the importance of bringing a long term solution besides an immediate solution.

Mr Samuel also reiterated the need for dialogue between political parties and said the UN would assist the Maldives in everyway possible.

He also said he has a “great deal of admiration” for President Nasheed’s contribution to bringing democracy to the Maldives.

Vice President Dr Mohamed Waheed attended the meeting.
