New Ambassador of France accredited to the Maldives, Mr. Jean-Paul Monchau presented his letter of credence to President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, this morning.
At the ceremony held at the President’s Office to present credentials, President Yameen congratulated Ambassador Monchau on the commencement of his term.
Meeting the new Ambassador after the ceremonial presentation of credentials, President Yameen expressed hope that the cordial relations that exist between the two countries would further enhance during the tenure of Ambassador Monchau.
Speaking at the meeting, President expressed his gratitude for the Government of France’s continued support and assistance to the socio-economic development of the Maldives. He especially highlighted the developmental assistances received from France following the 2004 tsunami. He also recalled the pioneering contributions of France in the development of the country’s award-winning tourism industry, and expressed his hope that the Maldives would continue to feature among preferred destinations of French tourists.
Ambassador Monchau highlighted ongoing efforts to facilitate Maldivians to learn French as a useful business language, particularly for use in the tourism sector.
At the meeting, the President and the Ambassador also discussed bilateral relations and ways to further strengthen ties. In this regard, discussions were held on extending cooperation between the two countries in issues related to climate change and in developing tourism and fisheries sectors.
Ambassador Monchau reassured President Yameen of his Government’s continuous support and cooperation to the Maldives.
President Yameen was joined at the call by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Dunya Maumoon and Minister at the President’s Office, Hon. Mohamed Hussain Shareef. Ambassador Monchau was joined at the call by the Honorary Consul of France in the Maldives, Mr. Ismail Wafir.
