President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has said that he would always remind himself that he was the President of all Maldivian people. The President made this remark in his inaugural address delivered this afternoon. The President assured that his work would be for the betterment of the nation and the people.

In his speech, the President said that he would establish a government that focused on reducing expenditure, and always prioritized national interests.

“My government will protect the assets of the people. My government will explore ways the people will benefit the most of the land and other areas in their respective regions. Similarly, we will protect our proud national structures. We will protect the main gates of the country’s trade and economy. With the Grace of Almighty Allah, my government will be result-oriented and bring happiness and prosperity to the people.”

In his inaugural address, the President pointed out that the country was in a vulnerable state today. He said that the country was trapped in a great political turmoil, and that the people were frustrated. He further said that as the Head of State, and elected President of the people, his utmost responsibility would be to overcome the political instability, and to create a safe environment for the Maldivian people.

Continuing in this regard, the President underlined that this important problem could only be resolved by strengthening the social fabric and unity among the people, by prioritizing national interests over our personal interests, and by working towards the same destination through recourse, to the wisdom gained through our experiences in the past.

Noting that the Maldivian economy was in a deep pit, the President pointed out that the State deficit was nearly unreachable. “State expenditure greatly exceeds State income. Therefore, special attention must be accorded to minimize State expenditure. Without undertaking this endeavor, there cannot be a bright future. Special measures will soon be taken to minimize State expenditure”, the President reiterated.

“I sincerely call upon all the people of the Maldives to work together to make this journey that we begin today, a journey that will take us to new heights of development and to make this beloved country of ours the most peaceful and developed country in the region. I assure you that my government will create a safe environment for the people that will enable them to live a prosperous life. We will create a generation of youths who are responsible, productive, and skillful. We will change the economy to an all-inclusive economy, and provide equal employment opportunities.”
