President Dr Mohamed Waheed and First Lady Madam Ilham Hussain have hosted the official reception on the occasion of the Independence Day of the Maldives. The reception was held at the National museum last evening.
Speaking at the function, the President expressed his hopes for a peaceful, democratic process during the upcoming presidential elections. He said that it was most important to have an orderly, democratic process where everyone’s voices were heard.
In his speech, President Waheed said that he was hopeful that the Maldivian people continue to push ourselves towards a set of opportunities we can truly be proud, as we celebrate 48 years of Independence. In this regard, the President said that we want to be a society of democratic values and transparency, where each Maldivian citizen could trust that the government would do right by them when they are wronged, would protect them when needed, and always ensure the rights and privileges bestowed upon them through our Constitution.
Cabinet Ministers, Members of the Parliament, recipients of National Honours, State Ministers, Deputy Ministers, heads of various independent agencies, political leaders were in attendance at the reception. Foreign dignitaries who arrived for the Independence Day functions also attended the reception.
