President Dr Mohamed Waheed has said that the government gives a very high priority to give economic and political empowerment to women, and to increase the participation of women at the decision-making level.

The President made this remark while speaking at the official function held this evening to mark this year’s International Women’s Day. The function was held in Kanditheemu of North Miladhummadulu Atoll.

Underlining that increasing the number of women in politics was a necessary step towards the future of the country, the President said that the government gives high priority to promote gender equality. He noted that women’s participation in national development was growing, and said that women must be provided educational opportunities and skills development opportunities, for effective women’s empowerment.

In his speech, Presidents Waheed said that it was very disturbing that sexual abuse against women and children in the Maldives has been increasing. He said that as violence against women was growing, we must strive to give justice to those women who suffer.

“I assure you that my administration is fully committed to provide protection and security to everyone who is suffering from all forms of violence. My administration will give voice to women, children, the elderly and the disabled people. We will not hesitate to speak the truth.”
