President Dr Mohamed Waheed has said the government intends to double the amount of Thai investments in the Maldives. He made this statement while speaking at a joint press conference with the visiting Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, following talks with the Thai Prime Minister. The press conference was held this evening at Mulee-aage.


In his remarks, President Waheed noted that there were already significant Thai investments in the tourism sector. The President discussed with the Thai Prime Minister “the need for expanding investment in other sectors, such as food processing, infrastructure development, construction, and health care,” he told the media.


Stating that nearly 30 per cent of Maldives’ exports go to Thailand, the President said, “we would like to increase that number significantly in the coming years”.


The President praised the role of Thailand in the ASEAN, and noted as the current chair of the South Asian Association of Regional Cooperation, the Maldives wanted to further strengthen the relations between the two bodies.
In her statement to the media, Prime Minister Shinawatra committed to further consolidating and diversifying the bilateral relations between the Maldives and Thailand.
