President Dr Mohamed Waheed has called for capable Maldivians to join the educational sector. The President made this remark while speaking at the ceremony to award the national top achievers in secondary school completion examinations of 2011.

In his speech, President Waheed expressed concern over the reluctance of talented Maldivians to join the sector. In this regard, He said that it was a great injustice to the future of the education sector.

“Maldivian customs, Maldivian history and the Maldivian way of life can be best taught by Maldivians. Therefore, it is extremely important for more Maldivians to actively participate in the education sector”, said the President.

Highlighting the crucial roles of teachers and school administration to educate and discipline, President Waheed said that the administration should have due authority in implementing related policies. Continuing in this regard, President urged the school boards to put forward dialogue in reforming the administration of schools.

At last night’s function, President Waheed awarded Presidential Medals to students who achieved world’s top position at last year’s O’ Level exams. The newly introduced Presidential Medals was announced in the Presidential Address 2013.

In 2011, 37 students achieved first place in O’ Level examinations and a total of 426 students were ranked among the top ten achievers. Five students achieved first place in the world, while 30 students achieved top scores and 12 students achieved Cambridge High Achievement Award. This year, 22 schools received the Achievement Award and 62 schools received the School Progress Award.
