President Dr Mohamed Waheed has appealed to all Ministries to pay special attention to protecting State property, and restore rundown buildings. The President made this appeal in his address to the people of Meemu Dhiggaru, as part of his visit to the island today.

Speaking in this regard, the President said that the huge investments made for the islands by the people and the government were going to waste as a result of neglect to maintain those investments.

President Waheed said that when this year’s budget was planned, funding for maintenance and renovation in the education and health sectors had been included. However, the President noted that when it was finalised, cuts had been made in those areas. He further said that it was necessary to obtain budgetary support, or other means of funding, and that failure to do so would result in further growth of expenditure.

In his address to the people of Dhiggaru, President Waheed highlighted the developmental projects underway in the island, and those that were planned for the future. He also noted the high regard the people of the island accorded to education and Dhivehi literature.

As part of his current tour of some islands in the Mulaku Atoll, the President will next visit the island of Mulah.
