New United Nations Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative Mr Andrew Cox has presented his credentials to President Mohamed Nasheed.

Speaking at the meeting held at the President’s Office this afternoon, the President noted the instrumental role played by the UN system in the Maldives in the democratic reform process and dynamic transition period. He expressed cofidence of continued UN support for the Maldives in strengthening democracy in the Maldives.

Discussions, during the meeting were mainly focused on the programmes being carried out in the Maldives by the UN system and especially on how the UN could continue its assistance to the maldives after the Maldives’ graduation from Least Developed Countries (LDC) status.

At the meeting, Mr Cox assured the President of UN support for the maldives even after the graduation from LDC status. He also noted the current UN development projects were aligned with the government’s pledges and priority areas.

Mr Cox congratulated the President on the Maldives’ election to the UN Human Rights Council. He said this reflected the advancements the Maldives has achieved in protecting and promoting human rights.

The meeting was also attended by Vice President Dr Mohamed Waheed, Special Envoy of the President Ibrahim Hussain Zaki, Advisor on Political Affairs Hassan Afeef and Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Ahmed Naseem.
