In a statement issued by the President’s Office this evening, President Mohamed Nasheed has welcomed the opposition, Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party’s decision to end its demonstrations over hiked electricity tariffs and to cooperate with the government to resolve the issue.

Recalling the President’s this week’s radio address, the statement said the government was determined to find ways to lessen the burden on struggling households because of tariff hikes.

Last week, the President formed a task force to assist National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) in provding subsidies to lessen the burden of rise in electricity tariffs following the addition of a fuel surchage by STELCO to absorb the increase in global fuel prices.

The statement concluded by assuring the government’s committment to continue to cooperate with all opposition parties in working for the benefit of the people.
