President Mohamed Nasheed has today presented certificate to Guin Batten, who successfully rowed solo across the Maldives’ equatorial Zero Degree Channel.

The President, who was also the patron of the crossing, signed the certificate at a function held this afternoon at the President’s Office.

Speaking at the function, President Nasheed praised Batten for her achievement, and said it was a great honour for him to have been the patron of this crossing.

Batten thanked the President and the people for supporting the crossing and said she had “fantastic receptions on the islands”.

“I hope that my crossing is an inspiration to bring rowing back here to the Maldives,” she said.
With this crossing Batten has become the first solo rower crossing the Zero Degree Channel, the first female rower crossing the Zero Degree Channel, and has the fastest crossing time for a single rower to cross the Zero Degree Channel.

Guin Batten, a British national, completed the 60km crossing on 30 March, in 7 hours and 16 minutes.
