Tasks • A baseline study of the Islands from Haa Alifu Atoll to Noonu Atoll conducted; identified 11 islands requiring protection
• Haa Alifu Keylakunu island and its surrounding reef and lagoon, Haa Alifu Neykurendhoo island’s mangrove and wetlands and Haa Alifu Baarah mangrove and wetlands are now declared protected.
• Certain reef areas of 13 resorts are also declared protected under the Environment Laws.

Tasks • The national campaign to reduce plastic bags and plastic bottles distributed 9000 re-fillable “Super Water Bottles” to children in grade 1 this year.
• Additionally, 1530 out of 5000 bags donated by UNICEF has been distributed to 4 islands.
Benefits • Minimises the negative effects cause by single-use plastic waste on the marine biodiversity.
• Minimises the negative effects to health caused by micro plastic digestion in consumed fish.

Tasks • Nation-wide clean-up programme carried out in all islands with the support of more than 7000 individuals.
• A total of 195 tonnes of waste and 20 tonnes of plastic was collected from the Male’ area, and 21000 garbage bags of waste were collected from the islands.
• This programme will continue according to the scheduled plan of activities.
