In his weekly radio address, broadcast on Friday, President Nasheed has said that the decline in fish catch in the Maldives could be reversed through proper knowledge.
While fisheries sector in the Maldives had experienced a fall in fish catch, President said, fishing vessels have become bigger.
As recurrent expenditure on the bigger vessels was higher compared to smaller vessels, it was difficult for bigger vessels to make a profit during low-seasons, he added.
The President said that short-term and mid-term measures needed to be identified to address the issue of low catch.
As a short term measure, he pointed out that according to experts, it was most profitable if the bigger fishing vessels were utilised for longline fishing.
