President Mohamed Nasheed has inaugurated Maldives National Defence Force Malé Area, today.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony held this afternoon at Dharubaaruge, the President highlighted the benefits of decentralising MNDF operations.

The President said, MNDF staff, previously centralised in Malé, were now dispersed into different area command centers, and were able to work closer to their families.

Continuing on, the President said regional economies were booming with injection of more than Rf 62 million, which is spent annually on salaries, healthcare and catering for MNDF staff, directly into the local economies of the regions.

Furthermore, President Nasheed said MNDF has enhanced its capacity to protect the Maldives economic zone, and expanded its ability to respond to emergencies more effectively and efficiently.

The President also said the government was working to widen the role of MNDF in development and infrastructure projects.

At the inauguration ceremony, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces President Mohamed Nasheed presented the MNDF flag to the Commander of MNDF Malé Area Brigadier General Ahmed Shiyam Mohamed.

MNDF has already established area command centers in Southern, Central and Northern areas of the country.
