President Dr Mohamed Waheed has stressed on the importance of hybrid renewable energy systems in the Maldives’ islands in the future, to reduce the expenditure on power generation. The President made this remark while speaking at the conclusion of the second phase of the “Clean Energy Promotion in Male’” programme.

Speaking in this regard, the President expressed his hopes for investments by private individuals, apart from foreign assistance, in introducing hybrid renewable energy systems in the country.

Speaking at the function held at Velaanaage building this afternoon, the President noted that the project enables generation of 675 kW of power in Male’. He added that when the whole project is completed, it would enable the generation of 770 kW of power, which is equivalent to saving the electricity expenditure of 250 to 300 households in Male’.

In his speech, President Waheed underlined the need for alternative means other than fuel energy for power generation, for sustainable development of the country. He noted that the Maldives has been blessed with a tropical climate, and that we must find ways to utilize solar energy.

Highlighting the government’s successful energy policy, the President said that it addressed climate change issues that arose from the use of diesel and other fuels, reduction of harmful gas emission, and reduction of the expenditure of electricity in the Maldives.

 

The second phase of the “Clean Energy promotion in Male’” completes the installation of Solar PV Systems in five government buildings - Velaanage Building, Ghiyaasuddin School, Kalaafaanu School, Central Administrative Building of the National University, and Faculty of Health Sciences. At today’s ceremony, President Dr Mohamed Waheed switched on the grid system connecting the Solar PV systems established in the five buildings.
