The 12th Summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) member states began in Cairo on Wednesday. President Dr Mohamed Waheed attended the summit.
The opening session was presided over by Senegal’s President Macky Sall, who is also the outgoing Chairman of OIC. In his speech, he highlighted the significance of the theme of the summit Muslim world: New challenges and expanding opportunities. After President Sall’s speech, Egypt’s President Mohamed Morsi took over the OIC’s rotating presidency for the next three years.
The summit will discuss six major topics on the agenda, including the Jewish settlement in Palestine, conflict in the Islamic world, Islamophobia, humanitarian situation in the Islamic world, enhancing economic cooperation among member states, and promoting scientific, cultural and technological cooperation in the Islamic world.
About 56 states are attending the summit.
