President Dr Mohamed Waheed has conveyed greetings to the people of the Maldives on the New Year. Following is a translation of the President’s message:
“It gives me great pleasure to extend New Year greetings and warm wishes to the beloved people of the Maldives.
“The year 2012 saw major challenges, especially in the political challenges, in the country. It was, however, a year in which steps were taken with patience to maintain the security, safety and harmony of the country and its people. With the Grace of Almighty Allah, the affairs of the country are being steered in the right path.
“The Maldives will hold its presidential election during this year. Preparations for the elections are already underway. I take this opportunity to assure the people of the Maldives that the government will take all necessary measures to ensure a free and fair election.
“As we prepare for the upcoming elections, I urge the people to strengthen the harmony and unity that have existed in the Maldivian society over the years, and not to allow anyone to disrupt this social harmony.
“I also assure the people that the government will continue to provide security and improve the general welfare of the people, within the means of the budget. The government will continue to create a safe society with reduced crimes. I call upon the people of the Maldives to put national interest ahead of their political interests.
“I pray that the year 2013 be a successful year for the Maldives. And with the blessings of Almighty Allah, may the New Year bring greater peace and harmony, and allow us to achieve greater national development and progress.”
