President Dr Mohamed Waheed has today established the National Institute of Education, as advised by the Cabinet. The National Institute of Education will operate under the Ministry of Education.
Objective of establishing the National Institute of Education is to strengthen the education sector of the country; to administer the programmes carried out by the Education Development Centre and the Centre for Continuing Education, by a single institute; to reduce the expenditure on these programmes and enable efficient utilization of resources.
Following the establishment of the National Institute of Education, the President has abolished the Education Development Centre and the Centre for Continuing Education.
