Vice President Mohamed Waheed Deen has said every individual has the responsibility to promote and protect human rights. He made the statement while speaking at the function hosted by the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) to mark the International Human Rights Day. The function was held this evening at Dharubaaruge.

In his remark, Vice President stressed the responsibility of members of the People’s Majlis in protecting the human rights of citizens. He urged the members of the People’s Majlis to be committed to human rights standards when making legislations.

Noting that a number of legislations are already in existence, which provide for the protection of human rights, he called on the HRCM and all stakeholders to help government implement those laws.

Vice President Deen also said incumbent governments and Majlis would always have the greatest responsibility of guaranteeing human rights to citizens. Furthermore, he said, the Human Rights Commission too has a great responsibility in this regard and assured that the government would give its full support and cooperation to the Commission in their work.

Vice President also reiterated that this government would be transparent and open and treat all citizens with equality.
