President Mohamed Nasheed has appointed Mohamed Aswan as the Minister of State for Home Affairs.
In an emergency cabinet meeting held on 9 January, the cabinet decided to appoint Mr Aswan as Minister of State for Home Affairs to bring necessary reforms to the Maldives Police Service.
During the meeting the cabinet expressed concern over the continued “culture of police torture” at the Maldives Police Service.
The cabinet also acknowledged that despite incidents of police torture, the majority of men and women serving at the Maldives Police Service were professional and sincere.
Mr Aswan previously held the position of Minister of State, Principal Collector of Customs.
