President Dr Mohamed Waheed has said that the AusAID scholarship scheme is an important instrument through which the relationship between the Maldives and Australia is continuously strengthened. The President made this remark while speaking at the awarding ceremony of AusAID scholarships for the year 2013.

The President said that the Maldives greatly values the commitment that the Government of Australia has shown towards further strengthening the long-term relations between the two countries. The President noted that in developing the national higher education system, it was necessary to make the best use of scholarships we receive from friendly countries. He also said that such scholarships have made invaluable contributions for overall human resource development in the Maldives.

President Waheed conveyed his hopes that all recipients of the AusAID scholarships would represent the best of Maldivian traditions and values while abroad.

“My advice to you is to make the best use of the opportunity you have earned and return home with skills that can serve you and the nation”, said the President.

The AusAID has provided 33 scholarships for the year 2013; 16 Bachelor’s Degree courses and 17 Master’s Degree courses. The courses were awarded in the education sector, health sector, environment sector, and engineering sector.
