Vice President Mohamed Waheed Deen has said that each one of us carries the responsibility of nation building and that every man’s contribution to the development of the country must be listened to. The Vice President made this remark while speaking at the inauguration of the roundtable conference on strengthening the local governance system in the Maldives.
At the ceremony held this morning at the Traders Hotel, the Vice President said that the nation does not need to wait for a socially disruptive incident to take place, and that the system must change before the people’s frustration reaches uncontrolled limits.
The Vice President said that the local governance system was introduced so that the leadership could listen to what the people had to say, and to involve the people’s participation in the discussions through local councils. He further said that island councilors must listen to the people irrespective of the political party they belonged to, and that what was most important was national development.
Vice President Deen also highlighted the importance of empowering the people economically, noting that it was the key to freedom and democracy.
“If you don’t economically empower people there is no way they can move forward and develop their islands”, said the Vice President.
