President Dr Mohamed Waheed has stated that the government has planned more work for next year, to ensure further empowerment of local councils, in collaboration with the Local Government Authority. The President made this remark while speaking to the people of Meedhoo of North Maalhosmadulu Atoll.
In his speech, President Waheed expressed his concerns towards the obstacles faced in the process of decentralization of governance in the Maldives. Speaking in this regard, the President mentioned that the main aim of decentralization was to empower the islands and facilitate for the councils to have authority to carry out their work.
Further speaking, President Waheed highlighted that Meedhoo has been one of the exemplary islands which had been crime free this year. The President also appealed to all students to pursue their higher education in the island itself, as Grade 12 has been introduced in the Raa Atoll Education Centre.
