President Dr Mohamed Waheed has said that the Maldives could not afford to make a sustainable expenditure on diesel for power generation. The President made this remark while speaking to the people of Fainu Island, as part of his current visit to some islands in North Maalhosmadulu Atoll.

Speaking in this regard, the President said that the government was working on solving the issue of high electricity costs in the islands, by exploring alternative methods of power generation and energy sources. Noting that the electricity charges in the islands were much higher than necessary, the President said that adapting to renewable sources of energy would lower the cost of electricity for the island and the whole country in general.

In his speech, President Waheed noted that neither the country, nor the islands would be able to move forward if everyone did not work for it together. He said that the Maldives would not attain true development if we let division to be created amongst us, or if we prevent each other from carrying out their work.

Further, the President called upon everyone to put aside their differences and put in a joint effort for the development of the island. He also assured that the State would put in every effort in its capacity to carry out what was needed for the development of the island.
