President Dr Mohamed Waheed has said that it is the responsibility of every individual to protect and preserve the natural beauty of Maldives. The President made this remark this morning, while speaking at the Inauguration of the First National Stakeholder Conference on Declaring Maldives a Biosphere.

In his speech, the President said that this conference would facilitate the implementation of Biosphere Reserves in other islands. Further speaking the President called on the participants of the conference to explore ways to establish biosphere reserves in a way that advanced the country’s economy and the livelihood of the people.

In his speech President Waheed noted the importance of the participation of the public, various organisations, councils and all sectors in the government’s work in establishing biosphere reserves in other islands.

In 2009 the cabinet made the decision to establish a biosphere reserve in Baa Atoll. Baa Atoll was officially declared a biosphere reserve earlier this year.
