The President has urged the nation for greater vigilance against rebellious forces in light of historic events such as the coup d’état on 3rd November 1988, wherein drastic attempts were made to subvert national independence and seize the governmental rule. He made this statement while addressing the ceremony held this evening, to mark the unveiling of the Special Memorial constructed in commemoration of the martyrs associated with 3rd November 1988’s rebel attacks.
Speaking at the ceremony, the President highlighted on the importance of fostering deep love in our hearts for the sovereignty of our Nation, and failing to do so may cost us our most prized possession – national identity and independence. He added that the rebellious attacks of November 1988 were unanticipated and therefore, completely alarming to the people of our country. The President further highlighted that on all such occasions where national independence was targeted in the history of the Maldives, it was so due to the disloyalty of a fellow citizen who was unfaithful and insensitive to his own land and its people.
In his speech, President Waheed noted that the heroic courage and gallantry shown by our Defense Forces deserved utmost praise and honour. He added that the attacks on 3rd November would never elude the Maldivian mind and the great sacrifices of the martyrs would be treasured in the archives of Maldivian history for generations to come.
