President Dr Mohamed Waheed has allocated a sum of 10 million Maldivian Rufiyaa, to finance relief efforts against extensive property damage caused by the ongoing series of torrential rain storms in the country. The President formally announced his decision at a press conference held at Ibrahim Nasir International Airport this evening.
Speaking at the conference, President Waheed highlighted that nearly 24 inhabited islands have experienced rain-triggered flooding and large-scale property damage, while several families have indiscriminately felt the destructive force of heavy thunderstorms. The President pointed out that some residences had been ripped off their rooftops by strong winds, leaving their domestic facilities open to damage. President Waheed also revealed that many relief teams from Disaster Management Centre are currently active in areas damaged by the floods, working to collect useful information on the extent of devastation since yesterday.
Briefing the press on his visit to Haa Alifu Atoll Hoarafushi today, the President noted that nearly 100 families were directly affected by the rainstorms. He stated that he had met with these affected families and commended the various recovery efforts being driven by the Atoll Council, relevant authorities and other similar organisations.
