Member of the Politburo Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China, Mr Li Changchun has paid a courtesy call on President Dr Mohamed Waheed today.

At the meeting held at the President’s Office, the officials noted that this year marked the 40th anniversary since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and China, and discussed ways to further strengthen the close bilateral relations. They underlined that the ties between the Maldives and China were exemplary of relations between big and small countries.

The President expressed his gratitude to the Chinese government for their continuous assistance provided for the development of the Maldives. He also mentioned that Chinese investors were always welcome in Maldives to explore investment opportunities.

At the meeting, Mr Li Changchun conveyed his confidence that President Waheed’s term in office would bring more political stability, social harmony and economic development to the Maldives. Mr Changchun also welcomed investors from the Maldives to explore Chinese markets.

Following the meeting, two very important agreements were signed between the Maldives and China:

The exchange of letters to conduct a feasibility study for the development of road in Laamu Atoll Gan to Fonadhoo stretch of islands, was signed by Minister of Housing and Infrastructure Dr Mohamed Muizzu and Vice Minister of Commerce of China, Mr Jiang Zengwei.

The memorandum of understanding concerning the provision of goods for addressing climate change, was signed by Minister of State for Environment and Energy Mr Abdul Matheen Mohamed, and Chinese Ambassador to the Republic of Maldives Mr Yu Hongyao.
