President Mohamed Nasheed has submitted the bill on narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances to the People's Majlis.
The bill chiefly aims to:
- curb drug abuse and drug trafficking
- establish treatment mechanisms and institutions
- outline offences and punishments for drug related offences
- create policies and regulations to address drug trafficking
The bill will create a legal framework that paves the way for addressing drug abuse – a key electoral pledge of the government.
The new bill will replace the existing law on drugs that has been ineffective in addressing drug related issues.
