Official bilateral talks were held between the Maldives and China yesterday. The meeting was held at the State Guest Hotel in Xinjiang Province of China.

At the meeting, the head of the Chinese delegation was the Premier of China Wen Jiabao, and the head of the Maldivian delegation was President Dr Mohamed Waheed.

Both the Maldivian and Chinese delegations noted the long existing friendly ties between the two countries, especially that this year marks the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and China.

The cooperation already established in trade and assistance programme between the two countries was also highlighted at the official talks. Further, the Chinese Premier assured that the Chinese government would continue to give its full assistance to the Maldives in the protection of its environment, and the development of transport, construction, and road construction sectors.
