President Dr Mohamed Waheed expressed his confidence that the investigative report of the Commission of National Inquiry (CoNI) would be an impartial and factual report acceptable by all. The President made this remark in an interview given to Raajje Miadhu programme of Television Maldives last evening.

In his interview, the President said that CoNI’s independence, impartiality, and credibility has now been very well established. Noting that CoNI’s report would be acceptable by all, the President said that the member from former President Nasheed was included in the commission with the condition that former President Nasheed and his party should agree with CoNI’s final report. The President also noted that none from the international community has raised any doubt of the independence, integrity, and morality of the commission.

When asked if the comment of former President Nasheed’s member, that the commission’s draft report was unacceptable by him, would have any effect on the CoNI’s final decision, President Waheed said that it has already been agreed for none of the commission members to reveal any information till the commission’s work has been completed.

Saying that former President Nasheed’s member gave the interview in contradiction with the confidentiality agreement, the President appealed to all members of the commission to refrain from revealing any premature information. The President also said that if any member had any concerns, to make it a point to discuss with the other members, and resolve all doubts at commission meetings without taking it out on the streets.

In his interview, the President also highlighted his recent visit to Sri Lanka, saying that the main purpose of the visit was to further strengthen the close ties between the Maldives and Sri Lanka.
