The President has today decided to bring a number of responsibilities previously assigned to the Male’ City Council, under the direct supervision of the respective ministries.

The President made this decision following the advice from members of the cabinet at today’s cabinet meeting. Members noted that this would facilitate better administration of public service, as some councils failed to carry out the duties assigned to them under the Decentralisation Act.

At the meeting, members stressed that the transfer of responsibilities from the Male’ City Council to the ministries would enable the government to better ascertain that the people are being provided with the services.

Further, members of the cabinet underlined that every local council should put aside political differences and provide public services to the people equally, as stated by the Decentralisation Act.
