President Dr Mohamed Waheed will arrive tomorrow, following the conclusion of his trip to Rio de Janeiro. The President made this visit to attend the UN Conference on Sustainable Development, Rio + 20.

During his trip, President Waheed announced that the Maldives was set to become the first country to be a marine reserve, and also the single largest marine reserve in the world, by 2017. The President made this announcement at the 1st Plenary Meeting of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, Rio+20.

The President also briefed participants of The Maldives Story, a session organized by the Maldives as a side event at the Rio+20 Summit, on the government’s environment and economic policies.

Further, the President held discussions with key international figures, on a range of issues including sustainable development, renewable energy, and climate change. President Waheed also met with several members of the international press on the Maldives environmental priorities and commitment to practicing sustainable tourism.
