UN Secretary-General Mr Ban Ki-moon said that the Maldives can count on the UN for support in consolidating democracy in the Maldives and in the country’s efforts to transform into a low-carbon economy. The Secretary-General made this remark at a meeting with President Dr Mohamed Waheed, on the sideline of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development.
During the meeting, President Waheed briefed the Secretary-General on the efforts being made to strengthen the Commission of National Inquiry (CoNI) that was established to examine the facts and circumstances leading to the transfer of power on 7 February 2012. The President expressed the Government’s appreciation for the positive role the UN has been playing on consolidating democracy in the Maldives.
President Waheed and the Secretary General discussed a range of issues including sustainable development, renewable energy, and climate change. During the discussions, the President assured the Secretary-General that the Maldives will continue with its strong stand on creating global awareness on the dangers of climate change, and in protecting and promoting human rights internationally.
