President Dr Mohamed Waheed has yesterday met with the people of Eydhafushi and Dharavandhoo of Baa Atoll, during his one day trip to the islands.

In his address to the people of Eydhafushi, the President highlighted the economic and social challenges being faced in the country today. The President called for responsible use of the right to freedom of expression, and to consider others’ rights in exercising one’s own rights. He also noted that there were amendments to be brought to the constitution, in order to strengthen democracy in the Maldives.

In his speech President Waheed said that the country would remain calm only when the rule of law is upheld and respected by all. He also reiterated that he would never give an unconstitutional order, and that he would never take a step back in carrying out his duties as president.

Highlighting the political reform needed in the country, the President spoke on the efforts being put in to form a National Unity Government, where all political parties work together.

Following the conclusion of his visit to Eydhafushi, the President next visited the island of Dharavandhoo. Meeting the people of the island, President Waheed highlighted the developmental programmes planned for the island.

Further, the President spoke on the measures being taken by the government in stabilizing the country’s economy. Referring to the low economic state of the country, the President assured that the government would continue to provide all primary services and benefits to the people, without regard to the political parties they belonged to.
