President Dr Mohamed Waheed and First Lady Madam Ilham Hussain have arrived back in Male’ this evening, on conclusion of their official visit to the UK.
The President made this visit to attend the Diamond Jubilee functions of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Head of the Commonwealth.
During his visit, President Waheed and the First Lady attended the National Service of Thanksgiving in honour of Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee, followed by a lunch hosted by British Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, The Rt Hon William Hague MP. The President and the First Lady also attended a luncheon hosted by Commonwealth Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma, in honour of Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee.
As part of his visit, President Dr Mohamed Waheed gave interviews to UK media outlets, and later met with UK-based Maldivian students and families as well.
On arrival at the Official Jetty in Male’ this evening, President Waheed met with the local media and answered some questions posed to him.
