President Dr Mohamed Waheed has reiterated the government’s stand on protecting the environment of the Maldives, and bringing to the notice of the international community, the environmental issues faced in the country.

The President made this remark in his address delivered on the occasion of the World Environment Day, marked on the 5th of June.

Referring to this year’s Environment Day theme, Green Economy: Does it include you?, the President highlighted the need to pay special attention to the environmental factors in achieving economic development. He also noted that the world needed to give priority to inventing environment friendly products, in attaining advancement in the technology sector.

In his address, President Waheed highlighted the preparatory steps being taken by the Maldives for the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio + 20), to be held from 20 to 22 June in Rio de Janeiro.

The President has said that the main objective of the Maldives taking part at the summit was to bring to the attention in the global arena, climate change issues and its effects to the Maldives, and secure further cooperation and support from the international community, to combat the environmental challenges.
